Nothing we ever did excuses the mad mullahs from waging war against us, as if keeping them from falling to the communists didn’t save millions of Iranians in itself. Not only that, but the dp’s idea of justice and progress turned Iran over from a US friendly monarch that killed or imprisoned thousands of his people for political reasons, while trying(and doing a fair job) to modernize his country, to a US hostile religious oligarchy that kills and imprisons millions of it’s own people for political reasons. It’s not what I call progress when most of the country crumbles back into the 19th century, yet exports terrorism worldwide and builds nukes and ICBMs. I’ll take the GOP’s “unintended consequences” over the dp’s any day. Like with the Cold War, it’s pretty obvious who was right and who was wrong there, and it doesn’t change the fact that they are waging war against us today, or what we should do about it either.

It’s just as obvious that the Saudis, who we pledged to defend, invited us into their country to defend it against saddam, and obl should have found a better way to express his displeasure than killing Americans (and that goes for the mad mullahs too). It’s easy to see that allowing private citizens, or groups, to determine their national policy over their government (much less our policy), by threat or act of terrorism, is stupid, and only encourages terrorism. It’s just as stupid to think people like obl, who derive all of their power and fame from killing Americans and our allies, will ever lack a pretense to kill Americans and our allies.

The Japanese didn’t surrender until after the second bomb was dropped, and almost didn’t then. They wouldn’t surrender to stalin any more than to us until they were faced with annihilation without significant cost to us. Stalin tried to divide japan, his hacks showed up in Japan to arrange it, but MacArthur put his foot down and refused to allow Russian troops on the main islands in defiance of Truman.
