1. The use of A-bombs against Japan in 1945 ENDED WWII and saved a million American lives and the Japanese race who would have fought to the death had we invaded Japan in late 1945 or 1946.
2. Can you imagine the political uproar had We invaded Japan, lost a million soldiers and Truman would have later gone public saying it was not necessary b/c we had a big bomb that would have won the war?
3. Had we invaded Japan the Soviet Union would have too and we would have had a split Japan just like Germany, Viet Nam, and Korea? How did a split Viet Nam work out for you? How is a split Korea working now?
4. As tough as it was for Truman in 1945, it showed the world the power of nuclear weapons. And because of such power, the Cold War went nearly 50 years without the use of another nuclear weapon by the Soviets, the US or anyone's allies. Even India & Pakistan have not pushed that button yet. Like it or not Peace through deterance and Mutually assured destruction did its job during the Cold War.
5. On a tactical note, had the US lost a million men invading Japan, also lost would have been their baby boomer children. We would have been a weaker nation due to cost of lives and treasure and Stalin would have been bolder after WWII in Europe and we probably would have had to use nukes to keep him out of Western Europe and by then the entire world would have suffered from a nuclear exchange.
No one wants a war, but I will go to my grave beliving using those bombs to end WWII was the right thing to do and it saved the world another 60+ years from being used elswhere. However sadly it wont matter to the radical muslims or North Korea if they choose to use nuclear weapons against someone in the future.
