From a fiscal conservative point of view government should not pay for health care, nor abortions. Of course, from a practical (crass) point of view paying for an abortion may be cheaper than paying for child support, welfare, or "juvie" for unwanted children.

From a federal conservative point this probably should be decided by states. (See 10th amendment)

Should abortion be prevented if the mother's life is in danger?

When is life defined as beginning? In most states life is defined as beginning at birth. However, many people believe that life begins at conception, while others believe that life beginning should be considered at viability (last trimester - if a fetus has died of natural causes then it would no longer be viable; this was an issue at one point where women were forced to carry longer than they desired).

If someone honestly believes that life begins at conception then abortion is murder of an innocent. This could be far worse than the death penalty for a criminal. Of course, everyone does die eventually, so the manner and time of the death are a possible issue for capital punishment. I'd suggest that those who are opposed to abortion for these reasons try to determine a way to provide for mothers with unwanted, unborn fetus (medical care, counseling, and adaption). Instead of trying to tell others what to do, perhaps try to give them an acceptable alternative.

Someone who honestly believes (supported by current laws, I believe) that life begins at birth may consider the unborn, unwanted fetus to be something like a tumor. Removing it may be uncomfortable, but in their opinion life may be better as a result. Those I know who have had abortion tend to struggle a little emotionally, in the short term at least. Perhaps they may pursue this similar to "Sopie's choice". (sacrificing one potential child, so that a later child would be in a better position to succeed)
