Years ago I was taught a great lesson in taxes. While in college I ran a local bar and grill. Every payday, the owner would come in to pay the 8 or so employees. He would actually sit down, take each employees time card and calculate what they should receive for their pay based on the pay rate and the hours worked. Then he would count out that the gross pay in cash. Then, he would use the tax calculations to take back the cash required for taxes, social security, or any other charges. I still remember the first time he did it and the impact it made on me. Seeing the cash I was due and then watching him take it back was something I will never forget, and is why today, over 20 years later, I still know exactly how much I am forced to turn over to the government ever two weeks.
