I had heard that torture eventually worked on John McCain, though the case described by "Sarah Palin" (1st post) may well be the case. I think a big key to successful torture is convincing the tortured that the information they give can be verified. Also, as brain scanning improves, such lies to avoid further torture will become increasing hard to pull off successfully.
