While this isn't "change", it's not without economic benefit in the short term. All these projects WILL pour money into projects that will most likely involve private contractors. The computers aren't going to made or supported by teachers. The windmills might be fabricated in China, but they will be assembled and operate in the USA.

So you'll see some short term benefit in capital driving into projects at a time when there isn't much expansion going on. However, the long term cost probably outweighs any short term benefit. I'd like to see someone (probably had been done) do a detailed study on how much economic cost is associated with deficit spending, especially when we already service 10 trillion worth of debt. How much tax dollars go to service existing debt. How much will spending more now cost in increased debt payments? How much will that increased drain on the overall GDP of the country affect future economic growth?

Outside of any libertarian gripes with the role of government to begin with, I think there is plenty to be said about how spending more of what you don't have, after you've been spending what you don't have for decades, is probably bad no matter what short term economic benefit it brings.

Who REALLY wants to talk about downsizing, though? On the Left, you get wild cries about taking food out of the mouths of poor people or abandoning our obligations to our (children, elderly, you name it). On the Right you'll get cries about any cut in projected spending increases in the Defense arena as weakening America, hating America, being France, ect.

We need to tighten the belt. When I see billions dumped into US defense spending in places like S. Korea (economy 50 times larger than N. Korea), Europe, and other far flung locations, I am shocked. These countries can and should pay for their own defense. Instead we do it and get sucked into brushfire conflicts around the globe with no net benefit to anyone except US presidents who get to stand center in every photo op with foreign leaders. We need to stop talking about new social programs and curtail the ones we have.

Cutting taxes really isn't going to fix anything. It's the same short term mentality that has us in more debt than most people (including me) can really comprehend.
