I'm with ya on this one, Neil. I'm a graphic artist and have worked on my own for over 20 years, never once asking for a hand-out through government grants. Apparently, private citizens and companies like paying me for the work I produce. I tell ya, I feel much better about my work when it's something I like to do and people appreciate it enough to buy it, whether on their own or by request.

The local arts council in the city where I live is constantly putting on seminars about how to write for government grants and I make it a point to have nothing to do with them. These "artists" use the grants to live on while producing junk that I have to avert my eyes from as they sit on the lawn at the courthouse or city hall. I tell them, if people won't buy it then get a real job! Or get better at what you do while you're working at a real job.
