After Jimmy Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act, signed into law October 24, 1978, the airlines have never bothered to update their business model. The big guys are still operating with the "hub and spoke" model. The new guys are not operating that way and that's why they're doing better.
Let the airlines fail. New folks will start up and create much more efficient companies.
And for you folks who think that the rural areas won't be served without this current model, keep in mind that entrepreneurs will step in. Don't believe me? Look at Nantucket Island. They have no major airline service but there's plenty of cheap flight to there.
