The reason the automakers don't want to file bankruptcy is simple -- it's extremely risky.

If Wal-Mart or Target filed bankruptcy, we'd still go in and buy our clothes and CD's there. But if a car company files bankruptcy, people will be extremely wary of buying one of their cars, for fear the company will disappear and they will be left with no warranty coverage. A bankruptcy filing would probably lead to a disastrous drop in sales.

I wish they could file bankruptcy and get rid of the unions. The unions are killing the auto industry in America.
