I am a medical student and will own about $150k in debt by the time I get my MD. At that point, I will work at a hospital which will pay me 32k per year after taxes on average while working about 80 hours per week, sometimes more until I finish my residency (3-5 years). I believe that averages about $7.50 an hour while paying back our loan amounts, roundabouts. This giving back crap is exactly that... crap. We already give back... alot. I love what I do and I'll do it for next to nothing to become a good doctor, but at some point the collection agency will knock down my door. So, until "sorry, giving back" seems like sufficient payment for the delinquent loans I will politely suggest that Mr. Daschle shut his mouth. Additionally, I believe at some points, us medical professionals would like to get some sleep, have some fun, read a book, get a girlfriend etc. For all the times I've heard that doctors need to be people first, it surprises me that anyone would want us to enter into the workforce so early. Give us some time to LIVE a little so we can at least APPEAR human.
