Many people don't realize that many state workers, including many state workers in California, who are eligible for these "great" pensions, have not paid into the Social Security system, and while their pension benefits are higher than Social Security in many cases, they have not paid Medicare taxes. That means when they reach 65, they are paying for their own medical insurance which offsets any pension benefits. Some state employees have lower pensions, but have been paying Social Security and Medicare taxes, but those employees are usually paid below the prevailing wage for the job they do. My husband works for the State of California for about half of what he would get in the private sector, but he loves his job.
