I'm on the fence with this one. I have zero problem funding research to cure AIDS. If I could earmark my tax dollars to certain causes, this is very high on my list of causes to support. As a rebuttal to what one person said earlier, contracting AIDS not always a personal failure and it is a pandemic that effects the whole world.

HIV drugs are expensive, most to the tune of $3000 a month for one prescription. I don't like seeing people suffer through anything, but I also don't want the money coming out of my pocket to pay for those prescriptions for people without health insurance, especially when I pay nearly $400 a month for my insurance. Again, another dilemma. Do we let people suffer and die or do we take money out of other people's pockets to treat for the rest of their life? I'd rather pay to cure them and get it over with.

One of the largest problems here is the lack of sex education for teens and children by both parents and government schools. Education is the key to fixing many of our problems, and AIDS is no exception. Abstinence education doesn't work. Period. Teach real sex ed. Teach about condoms of all varieties. Give teens the power of knowledge and actual correct information.

Sorry for the rant, but with the comments above I had to put my two cents in, considering my close association with the topic.
