A long time ago, I remember President Bush announcing the huge program to use US money to combat AIDS in Africa. I was for it in those days. I thought it would create good, healthy allies in most countries on a huge continent. Good PR while doing good works seemed like a smart way to spend a chunk of money to the benefit of US and THEM.
Now, I'm not for it at all. A small bit of advertising and news reporting telling people not to trade body fluids with strangers is the only way to combat AIDS.
We should spend NO money to pay failure; and contracting AIDS is a personal failure. If you don't have Magic Johnson money to buy AIDS drugs for the rest of your life, you might want to stay a virgin until you marry a virgin; and teach your children to do the same.
We need to stop paying corporations, individuals and institutions for failing. Throwing money at Schools run by losers because they're losing, corporations run by losers.... unwed mothers.... AIDS? We're rewarding failure. We're compelling losers to keep losing. We're tempting others who see the benefit of those behaviors to seek those same benefits. And, we're inspiring all losers to pad their stats to make their self-made, dire conditions seem worse than they truly are.
That's what paying AIDS does. That's what the Global Poverty Initiative will do.
