The Guardian of London reports yesterday that the U.S. has quietly "given up control of the Internet." There is some group in California called ICANN that controls all domain names such as .com, .org, .edu. .gov etc. Now ICANN will become an international body subject to some control from foreign governments. The question here is how much control and which foreign governments? Remember, despots hate the free dissemination of information. You'll even see that in this country with the calls for control over talk radio. So .. .wither the Internet? I guess we'll stay tuned and see what happens.
Hey look! We switched to a new provider for our online broadcast. Check it out. The audio quality has been improved so it should sound much better for you. If you have any troubles with the new online broadcast, see our audio help page. I know the page talks all about Internet Explorer like no one uses anything else, but the stream cranked up just fine for me using Safari on a Mac running 10.6. It also worked fine using Firefox 3.5.2 on a WinXP box. Ah, just checked it on the iPhone. Works just fine. Maybe someone can tell us if it works on a Blackberry?
There is a movement happening in the UK right now. Insurance companies are considering the idea of raising insurance premiums for anyone who uses social networking sites. This includes sites like Facebook or Twitter. They say premiums could rise, even if only your children are on social networking sites. Why? Because burglars are using the sites to "shop for victims" ... keeping track of when you are on vacation, home addresses, birthdays, etc.
The question here is whether or not the insurance regulations in the UK will allow insurance companies to compete on something like this. The private market can take care of asinine ideas like raising premiums on Facebook customers. Let some company try this, and another company comes along and steals their customers. All you need is competition. Unfortunately, competition is poison to governments. We'll see what happens.
Yesterday I (@talkmaster) suggested on Twitter that someone should do a poll: Which would you rather have? (1) Swine Flu, or (2) ObamaCare. Here are some responses:
@rachelburks - I will take my chances with the swine flu.
@shizelbs - Swine flue without a doubt.
@ContractHdwGirl - Definetly the swine flu.
@hoss7071 - I would rather have the swine flu. Unlike ObamaCare, swine flu is something I have a chance of getting rid of.
I loved our marginally-intelligent HHS Secretary telling us yesterday that the Swine Flu is so dangerous because it is a new strain and most people don't have immunity. Well ... here's a flash for you. Every year we have a new flu strain and every year people don't have immunity. Duhhhhhh.
I'll be constantly throwing out tweets during the show. Some will make sense.
You listeners know I bought one of those KindleDX things from Amazon.com. In short ... I love it. I've read several books on the Kindle and have the Wall Street Journal downloaded every day. In cruising the on-line Kindle Store I noticed that there are thousands of blogs available for download. I established an account with Amazon.com and now my "blog," Nealz Nuze, is available for daily download! I understand that you can now also subscribe to Nealz Nuze for your iPhone or your iPod-Touch. Here's how it works for your Kindle. You go to the Kindle Store, then go to blogs. Enter "The Neal Boortz Show" in the search terms .. and you're there! Yes .. it's gonna cost you. The subscription fee is tough. $1.99 per month. That's about 6.5 cents per day. I know the economic downturn is tough ... but that's not exactly going to break the bank. Right now I'm pretty much at the bottom of the chart ... but WTH, we just started yesterday.
I love gadgets ... but some of them just don't meet up to my expectations. The KindleDX did. A tremendous way to take several books and a few newspapers to the pool.
Anyway ... for you Kindle owners out there. Nealz Nuze will soon be available on a subscription basis on your Kindle! Yup ... it's gonna cost you. About 99 cents a month. I'll get some of that. IRS, are you listening?
Over 7000 followers on Twitter so far. I just know we can reach 10,000. Unlike other hosts, I actually Tweet. User name "Talkmaster". Oh yeah, and Jamie Dupree is on Twitter too!
Speaking of entitlement culture. Our imperial federal government is trying to capitalize on your next right that must be protected by the Constitution .... Your right to high-speed, affordable Internet access!
You may think I am joking. But there are people out there who sincerely believe that they have the right to own a home and the government has the obligation to make sure that happens. And when it comes to Internet access, we are well on our way to enabling this entitlement mentality.
The FCC, by order of the Congress, has until February of 2010 to come up with a plan to address the issue of "Internet openness, definitions of affordability and what speeds are fast enough." According to whom, the government? So the government, rather than the private sector and the free market suddenly want its hand in determining what is considered "fast enough" Internet access what constitutes "affordable"? Also .. just how do you define "openness?"
It is the goal of the FCC to provide "all citizens" with "high-speed value-laden broadband." Thanks to Barack Obama's stimulus package, we are well on our way to achieving this.
Setting myself up for an "I told you so" here. The ultimate plan here will be for the government to begin controlling Internet content. Any decent Democrat would want this.
Since it's an anything goes Friday...if you don't know what Twitter is, here is your primer. If you are familiar with it, you'll get a good laugh from this.
Have you heard the news about Wal-Mart? Whenever I mention Wal-Mart, most liberals start rolling their eyes ... it is "anti-union" or it is an "evil corporation." Well Wal-Mart has decided to enter into the world of digitized healthcare data by unveiling its own version of high-tech medical records.
Only get this ... Wal-Mart can do it cheaper and faster than the government can! Now if this surprises you it's evident you haven't been paying attention.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson says the company is partnering with Dell and software maker eClinicalWorks to launch a bundled electronic health records package for doctors. The package will include installation and maintenance and it will be offered through the company's Sam's Club discount-warehouse division, which caters to small businesses.
And guess what .. it will be launched by this spring. Just how fast do you think the government could get this done?
Lesson? In virtually every field, every endeavor ... the private sector can get it done faster and more efficiently than government. The problem is that if the private sector accomplishes a worthy goal, the private sector gets the credit. If government does it, no matter how badly, the government gets the credit. This man in the White House loves government. America, to him, is government. You cannot allow the private sector to do something that government can do. It weakens government .. and this doesn't make Democrats happy.
Let's see what the Democrats come up with to thwart Wal-Mart's plans.
Obama wants to eliminate weapons from space. Come one here. Is there anyone out there who seriously thinks that weapons can be eliminated from space? This can't be a serious proposal. As space technology continues some country, somewhere, is going to surreptitiously move weaponry into orbit around the earth. Only when the weapons are in place will we be told of their existence That little news bulletin will come complete with a set of demands and promises of a little spaced-base ugliness if those demands aren't met.
The only thing Obama's efforts will produce will be our finding ourselves flat-footed when space weapons become a reality. Then we'll be playing catch up ... if catching up is even possible.
We'll add this to the closing of Gitmo, the halting of the trials of terrorist detainees, and the promise not to use extraordinary interrogation techniques - including things as benign as the "good cop, bad cop" routine - to the list of signs of weakness shown by the Obama administration.
People are noticing. People we don't particularly like.
If you really want to have fun with Google, I've got one for you. Next time someone asks you a question they should have searched Google for rather than bothering you, here's a little tool for you. Put their question in the box, like Google, and poke Google Search. A link will created for you to send them, or, even better, if you mouse below the link, you'll get a button that says tinyurl. Click that. Then send them the link it gives you, so they don't know you're having fun with them by looking at the link. Click go and see what happens. Ha! They probably still won't get it.
