THE WORLD SERIES

Who am I rooting for in the World Series?  Well ... first of all, I probably won't give the whole mess a second thought .. and if I do watch it won't be until we get to a deciding game.  If Bobby Cox isn't there I don't care.  But .. having said that, I was born in the Philadelphia suburb of Bryn Mawr ... so do the math.

I heard Stephanie, a Penn State student, on Fox & Friends this morning talking about that asinine t-shirt controversy. I can report to you that she didn't use the "like" word one single time. She's a Senior .. someone will gobble her up in a hurry.

PEACHTREE ROAD RACE TIMING CHIPS

This won't mean much to someone not from Atlanta ... but they're going to put timing chips on the running shoes of all Peachtree Road Race participants this year. I like it because it may stop the cheaters.

The coveted prize for running the 10K Peachtree is that t-shirt. You get to wear that t-shirt to show everyone what a stud you are. Yeah .. you ran 6.2 miles in the sweltering July heat in Atlanta. Trouble is, out of the 55,000 runners, there are a lot of cheaters. They get their race number and then sit in the comfort of some Burger King or Starbucks halfway through the race until the runners start coming by. Then they toss their lattes into the trash and join the race to pick up their t-shirts.

Now the race organizers have a way to deny these cheaters their prize. If your chip doesn't show that you crossed both the starting line and the finish line you should go home wearing your sweaty running clothes. Let's see if the organizers have the nads to do this.

Leaving the University of Georgia after your junior year to stand for the NFL draft? Worth several million dollars at least. Getting drafted by the Detroit Lions? Having to live and work in Detroit? Priceless. There is a God.

Did you lose a job recently? Has half of your retirement income vanished. Have you had to go back to work in what were supposed to be your retirement years? If so .. then the mere sight of Barney Frank must disgust you. And then, of course, there's Chris Dodd. Well .. while you're struggling to survive, you might be interested to learn that the Congress is currently debating how college football picks its #1 team. Yeah and this is going to affect your life how?????

I am told that March Madness officially starts today. I couldn't care less, but since President Obama is too busy filling out his parlay care ... or is it the West Wing Pool, I am willing to be a humble replacement in the meantime. It's not like I have anything better to do. Apparently he doesn't either.

Now, on to more important things .......

March idiocy. No, I don't want to be in your office pool. The pro's farm teams are having a little playoff ... wonderful. I wonder how many of these "college students" could read the accounts of their games with a mild degree of comprehension.

Forget the presidential election or the inauguration. Today is going to be the biggest day of the year for all-too-many American men. Yup, today we'll put down our Sports Illustrated magazines and turn out full and undivided attention to the athletic offices of our favorite college or university. Today we all find out which hotshot high school athletic studs have signed to go to which college. The fate of the free world hangs in the balance. Finally we have something actually important to focus our attention on.

Yesterday the taxpayer ensured the fate of Citigroup to the tune of billions and billions of dollars. Citigroup will live to see another day. And maybe another bailout ... who knows. Now get this: despite the fact that it is now on the taxpayer hook, and recently fired 53,000 employees, Citigroup says it plans to maintain its $400 million contract with the New York Mets. They will pay the Mets $400 million so they can call their new stadium "Citi Field."

Now that just ain't right.

And it's not just Citigroup, folks. AIG pays a British soccer team $125 million to put "AIG" on their uniforms. This is the same AIG that just got a $150 billion loan from the taxpayers. Someone from a group called Taxpayers for Common Sense says it would be more accurate for the soccer team to put "US Treasury" on their uniforms. How about "U.S. Taxpayers"?

There are more examples. Bank of America took a $25 billion loan for the Treasury's Troubled Assets Relief Program. Meanwhile, Bank of America wants to pay the New York Yankees $20 million per year to be their sponsor. Bank of America also has its name on the Carolina Panthers football stadium ... that cost them $140 million.

Look, folks ... I'm sure that there are a lot of companies out there that have done it right. But there are a heck of a lot, especially on a larger scale, that just don't seem to get the message.
