INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY?

Let's talk for a bit about Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee. She decided that for some reason, she was going to play a prominent role in the memorial service of Michael Jackson. Well .. it was a spectacle, and what better place to make a spectacle out of yourself.

Back to the hyphenated Congresswoman in a moment. I made a few ... and just a few ... of my Twitter followers mad yesterday with some of my tweets about this memorial service thing out in La La land. I made clear my belief that Michael Jackson was a pedophile and that the world was now a better place. There was much agreement, but there were also some strong rebukes. I looked at the tweets of some of the people who took me to task. Really sad stuff. "Oh Michael, why did you leave me?" "The world will never be the same without this great man." "Michael was the most important person in my life." "I'm crying again, I just can't help it."

Yesterday we showed the world the worst face of the mindless culture of celebrity worship. We elevate these people to the position of Gods. Our bibles are People Magazine and US Weekly. Our services are held nightly on Entertainment Tonight.

Back to the esteemed Congresswoman from Houston. Sheila Jackson-Lee decided that she wanted to defend Michael Jackson against any charges of child molestation. Here's what she had to say: "We understand the Constitution, we understand laws, and we know that people are innocent until proven otherwise ... That is what the Constitution stands for." In case you missed it, here's the video:

OK ...here's a little civics lesson for you. This "innocent until proven guilty" thing ONLY applies to government. The idea that a person is innocent of a crime until he has been convicted is a complete absurdity. Once you've murdered someone, you are a murderer. You don't become a murderer when the jury says "guilty." You become a murderer when you pull the trigger. You've taken a life. Jury deliberations don't change that.

The purpose of the "innocent until proven guilty" concept is to hold a tight rein on government. Government, you see, is the only entity out there that can legally take your life, your property or your freedom. Our founding fathers saw fit to require that the government prove you're your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt before these actions are taken. So ... the ONLY place where this "innocent until proven guilty" standard applies is to government attempts to punish you for a crime. It doesn't apply to me or to you because we aren't empowered to carry out punishment.

So, Mrs. Jackson-Lee; only the government is forbidden from assigning guilt without due process, and there are plenty of exceptions to that rule, by the way. As for me .. as for the people ... we are perfectly free to assign guilt based on our beliefs, knowledge of the facts and understandings of the circumstances. We believe that O.J. Simpson butchered his wife. He's a murderer. And we believe that Michael Jackson was a child molester. Having millions of dollars you can use to pay off families and victims does NOT make you innocent.

Oh and while we are on the topic of Jacko's memorial service. Barack Obama apparently owes his presidency to Michael Jackson. That one is according to Al Sharpton.
